The Department of Public Works is responsible for the maintenance and repair of Village roadways and ensuring that Village neighborhoods and commercial areas are clean and safe. The Department of Public Works’ goal is to  provide a quality environment for the Village of Spring Valley.

Yard Waste Removal

IMPORTANT NOTICE

LEAVES IN PLASTIC BAGS, LEAVES MIXED WITH GARBAGE OR

PAPER WILL NOT BE PICKED UP!  Leaves /Grass Clippings / Twigs

are to be in separate bags.  Branches are to be bundled and tied. 

Branches should be no longer than three (3’) feet.

***Make note that it can take up to five (5) business days to remove yard waste from curbside.

Metal Removal

         Metal household items are picked up free of charge.  Call (845) 573-5800 when items are placed at curbside.

         Metal household items include, but not limited to: stoves, dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, bicycles, hot water heaters and other large metal household items. 

***Make note that it can take up to five (5) business days to remove metal items from curbside.

Catch Basin Repair / Sewer Maintenance

         Please contact (845) 573-5800 to report a clogged or collapsed storm drain (the drain along the curb).  Collapsed storm drains should be reported immediately upon notice.

         All sewers, which are located in the middle of the road, are maintained by Rockland County Sewer District No.1.  If you are experiencing sewer problems feel free to contact the Rockland County Sewer District at (845) 365-6111.

Road Impairments

         Road impairments must be documented in writing and mailed to:

Village Clerk’s Office

200 North Main Street,

Spring Valley, New York 10977.

         It is important that this written notice include the exact street location and dated.  DPW should then be notified by telephone to report road impairments in Village roadways. 

         Please make note that the repairing of minor road impairments can take up to five (5) working days.  However, impairments that are hazardous to motorists / pedestrians will be taken care of promptly.

Street Signs

         Please contact the Department of Public Works to report missing, downed or defaced street signs.

         STOP SIGNS that are missing, down or defaced should be reported immediately to DPW or the Spring Valley Police at (845) 352-7400. STOP SIGNS ARE REPLACED PROMPTLY UPON NOTIFICATION !

Tire Removal

         To remove tires from Village residences, a removal fee must be paid at the Village of Spring Valley Treasury Department located at 200 North Main Street, Spring Valley, New York 10977.

         Cost per tire for removal is:

· $3.00 per tire off the rim.

· $5.00 per tire on the rim.

         Contact the Building Department at (845) 517-1129 or DPW at (845) 573-5800 to report areas where there are abandoned tires that need to be removed.

Garbage & Recycling

         Household garbage in the Village of Spring Valley is picked up by Miele Sanitation, which is a private garbage collection company, contracted through the Rockland County Solid Waste Management Authority to remove refuse in the Village of Spring Valley . 

         Recyclables are picked up on Wednesday Only !   

         Bulk items will only be picked up on your 2nd PICK UP DAY OF THE WEEK. (i.e. Thurs., or Friday).  Bulk items include ALL NON-METAL ITEMS and FURNITURE ITEMS.

         Please contact Miele Sanitation directly should your garbage, recyclables and / or bulk items not be removed on your street’s regular collection days.  Miele Sanitation can be reached at (201) 768-5407 or (201) 768-3818. 

         If you should have any garbage collection problem not resolved in a timely manner, feel free to contact DPW at (845) 573-5800 or contact the Solid Waste Management Authority directly at (845) 753-2200.

Sidewalk Repair & Maintenance

         “All persons shall keep the sidewalks in front of the premises owned or occupied by them clean and free from papers, rags, scraps, sticks, fruit skins, earth and all manner of rubbish and refuse.  The keeping of paper, rags, scraps, sticks, fruit skins, dirt or rubbish or refuse of any kind onto the sidewalk, gutter or street or the pouring or dumping o waste or dirty water on any part of the sidewalk gutter or streets is prohibited”.  (Spring Valley Code § 229-2)

         “It shall be the duty of the owner and occupant, jointly, of every parcel of real estate adjoining a public sidewalk, whether the parcel of real estate is occupied by a structure or not, to keep such sidewalks adjoining such property free from snow and ice for the full paved width of such sidewalk.  Such owner or occupant shall be liable for any injury or damage by reason of omission, failure or negligence to keep such sidewalks adjoining such property free from snow and ice for the full paved width of such sidewalk”.  (Spring Valley Code § 229-32)

Brush, Hedges, Weeds and Trees

         “All owners or occupants of lands abutting on any street in the Village of Spring Valley shall be required to maintain and prune all trees, shrubs, hedges, grass, and foliage lying between their property lines and the curb of the street fronting or abutting their property”.  (Spring Valley Code § 79-1)
