         Many people in the Village are familiar with the Building Department because they may have had improvements that required a Building or Plumbing Permit; or, they may have needed a document from the file on their property -- such as a survey or blueprint, or even violation notices that may have been cited against a piece of property in the past. Whether you are familiar with the Department or have had no previous contact, we would like to familiarize you to who we are and what we do and how we serve the community.

OVERVIEW OF THE BUILDING DEPARTMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

         The Building Department of the Village of Spring Valley is responsible for administering and enforcing the codes for building, plumbing, and housing. It also regulates and oversees multiple dwellings, places of public assembly, unsafe buildings, and the uses and maintenance of real property in the Village. Most Construction and plumbing work requires a permit from the Building Department to ensure conformance to the International Code with New York State modifications, the NYS Uniform Fire & Building Code, as well as the Village of Spring Valley Codes. 

 

WHO MAKES UP THE BUILDING DEPARTMENT.  

I grew up in the Village of Spring Valley during the 1950's and 1960's.  I have been working for the Village since 1984 and became Building Inspector in 1989.  Therefore, I have personal knowledge of the changes that the Village has gone through and is going through now.  There is a strong and positive atmosphere in the Village because Mayor Darden and the Village Board have made the revitalization of Spring Valley a top priority.  The revitalization of the business district and other areas will improve the quality of life for every one who lives and/or works in the Village.

         I oversee the daily operation of the department.  I answer questions regarding pending and ongoing projects.  I interpret and enforce the construction and general codes as set down by the Village, County and State.  I review, approve or deny applications for permits and I sign permits, certificates of occupancy and compliance.

                 The Building Department consists of two Fire Inspectors,  two Assistant Building Inspectors, and two Code Enforcement Officers.  Together we serve the public; we assist and protect property; and we serve and protect the way of life for Village Residents.  We are responsible for the enforcement of Zoning laws, Housing Codes and Sign Ordinances, Building Codes, Plumbing Codes, and Maintenance Codes, as set down by Spring Valley, Rockland County and New York State.
