EARLY HISTORY OF CHURCHES AND SYNAGOGUES

     Churches
In 1850 a number of families, members of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church or "Brick Church" of West New Hempstead, who resided at Spring Valley made efforts to have divine service held in their own village. In three years a building was erected.

In 1863, the congregation had outgrown this house of worship, and preparations were made for a larger edifice. On January 5, 1865 the building was completed and on April 17th, the church at Spring Valley was legally incorporated.
On June 29, 1851 after a long discontinuance, the Union Sunday School, founded by Rev. Christopher Hunt, pastor of the Reformed Church at Clarksville in 1830, was reorganized in Spring Valley.

In 1852 the Union Sunday School building was erected.
The Protestant Episcopal Church at Spring Valley was legally incorporated on August 1, 1868. The corner stone of the church was laid on August 5, 1872.
The foundation of the Roman Catholic Church at Spring Valley was begun in 1868, but the congregation was not a large one, and the structure was not complete until 1880.
The First Congregational Church of Spring Valley was organized on April 8, 1886. The church edifice was dedicated with services extending from November 27 to December 14, 1890. An organ was installed through the generosity of Andrew Carnegie.

     Christian Science
Christian Science was first brought to notice in Spring Valley in 1915, when services began in private homes. But soon larger quarters were required, and services were held in the Academy Building. In November 1919, a building committee reported in favor of purchasing the R.C. Bultman estate on the corner of Main Street and Central Ave. The first services were held in this new building on Sunday, October 26, 1924.

     Synagogues
The Synagogue of the Congregation Sons of Israel was dedicated in 1899. A new building was dedicated December 17, 1922 when Dr. Samuel Berg was president of the Congregation.

The movement for a Jewish Community Center in Spring Valley was a development of the Congregation Sons of Zion. The organization of the Center took place in 1923.
The Jewish Community Center was dedicated on January 15, 1928.
The board of directors of the center appointed Rabbi Ja90b Cohen as the spiritual leader in February 1935.
